With freshman distance ace Morgan Gehl winning a pair of races in record-setting fashion, the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda girls’ track and field squad finished in third place, among seven teams, in the Class B division of the Bob Nangle Arrow Relays at Pipestone’s Paulsen Field last Tuesday, May 1.

Gehl impressively won both the 1,600 and 3,200 at Pipestone, smashing the existing Class B meet records in each gold-medal performance.

Gehl won the mile (1,600) in a stellar personal-record (PR) time of 5:14.19, which bettered the meet record of 5:30.44 set by Nicole Slater of Adrian in 2010.

Later, Morgan ran a time of 11:34.40, winning the two-mile (3,200) by 85 seconds and shattering the 32-year-old Class B record-time of 11:50.15 run by Heidi Jackels of Storden-Jeffers in 1986.

While winning both races, Morgan also ran faster than the Class A record times, which are still held by her aunt, Julie Kramer.  Running for Fulda High School, Julie’s 1,600 record is 5:18.5 set in 1986 and her 3,200 record time of 11:39.9 was run in 1988.
